The Blue Mountains World Heritage Institute wholeheartedly supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart, including the call for a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution, Treaty, and Truth-telling.
We acknowledge and deeply respect First Nations people as the original Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of Australia, recognising their sovereignty that was never ceded. We believe that a Voice to Parliament is a vital step towards recognising this in our nation's founding document and our laws.
First Nations Peoples hold knowledge and wisdom to drive meaningful change in their communities and guide effective management of our environment. A Voice to Parliament will ensure their voices are heard, support self-determination and provide some justice.
It's time for our Constitution to honour the 65,000 years or more of continuous First Nations Peoples' cultural connection to and guardianship of Country, including its lands, freshwater and seas. Their enduring care for Country teaches us important lessons about our relationship with nature and our collective responsibility to protect it. We acknowledge the rights and cultural authority of First Nations communities in shaping and guiding effective and inclusive nature management.
This referendum marks a significant moment in Australia's history, respecting the profound connection First Nations Peoples have with this land and giving them a crucial role in shaping laws and policies affecting their lives.
We recognise the diversity of opinions among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and encourage respectful discussions. After careful consideration, we firmly believe that a Yes vote on October 14 is a crucial step towards addressing historical injustices and promoting fairness in Australia.
