Bushfires: our past, present and future

Our most recent summer brought with it some of the worst Australian bushfires in modern history. As a dry–climate nation, we have some degree of fire damage every year, but why were these particular fires so severe? What can we learn from the history of bushfire in Australia, and how can we use that knowledge to plan for the future?
